Modules #13-14 Blog Review

Robert Barksdale Fundamental of Art 1785 Modules #13-14      The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast and Pop Art, was a thought-provoking video of what makes art worthy and who is judging what is worthy and unworthy. Lowbrow art is distinguished from high brow (elitist) art seemingly they same way that crafts were considered different. This video illustrates that art is in the eye of the beholder. Lowbrow art is relevant in everyday life in the modern world, from comic books, tattoos, automobile painting, graffiti, and many other expressions of vividly colored representational art. The bold colors, lines, use of bubbles and words, and the creation of modern everyday heroes are some of the ways this underground art is distributed and represented in the artworld. This art is vibrant and can possess different moods with its freedom of individualism. The Tate Modern Video gave a peek into what a exhibition might be by incorporating highbrow and Lowbrow art into its cu...

Module #2 CNN article Review

The videos relate to the article by laying a foundation for the correlating origins of the developement of art and civilized society. Art discovered in the Chauvet cave created during the Upper Palaeolithic era demonstrated the influence that the psyche had on developing society into an organized construct. The ability to copy nature in art, architecture, music while applying order and morality is a human attribute. Changeux and  Ramachandrans (20th century neuroscientist) , scientific view of aesthetics and art form the relationships between nature and mans urge to copy nature not only in the order of our codes and mores of our way of interacting with one another but additionally demonstrate the urge for humans to exemplify through artistic expression a human representation of these feelings of the human experience. The reading, videos, art and architecture represented all  illustrate the origins of Homo sapiens and the emergence from dark...

Module #12 Blog Review

I chose the film, Isamu Noguchi: the Sculpture of Spaces, because i was interested in the ideal of sculpture of spaces and what it meant to this artist and how I might interpret it. Noguchi saw the Earth as sculpture, and posited that sculpture of the future would be the Earth, "The imaginary landscape". The ideal of gardens being art is a worldwide industry for nurseries these days. His minimalist perspective of space in theater was influenced by his earlier ventures being raised in Japan and by his mother's influence. His garden designs also exhibited these same influences of earth and nature being simple and magnificent at the same time. Naguchi, like other artists, traveled in search of his artistic style including to France and the U.S. His sculptures and gardens melds with urban America seamlessly. I like his ideal that art can not be dictated but is organic and naturally occurring. His creations of fountains are mesmerising, as was his playground concepts. He says ...

Module #11 3 Art displays

Image
1. Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, born 1929). Title: Pumpkins. Media: Mirrored and polished bronze. Overhead white spotlight are used to highlight this artwork. It is elevated on a white square platform enclosed with rope. The walls are flat white, surrounding an open space that allows for a 360 degree view and easy access for patrons. It has form, balance and proportion, colored black and gold on high polished bronze. This "Pumpkin" is arranged in it's own space at the Albright Knox Art Gallery (all three pieces are from the gallery). I think that this art is organic in its representation although the media is inorganic. The geometric patterns painted black and gold do not resemble a pumpkin's colors, but is pleasing to the eyes nonetheless. As the artist intended, the "pumpkin" speaks to, life, fertility, and art in my opinion. I would categorize this as modern/pop art. 2. Alberto Giacometti (Swiss, 1902-1966). Title: Invisible Object (Hands H...

Module #11 Matisse & Picasso

I chose the two film "Matisse & Picasso" and "The Impact of Cubism". I chose these film because of the similarities that I saw between these two artists in the reading. I was curious about the relationship these two artist had with each other. It was interesting to note Matisse as the elder in age but new as an abstract/cubism painter when compared to Picasso who began his career at a much earlier age. Matisse was less experienced in the new form of art called fauve which Picasso seemed to acclimate naturally. Matisse and Picasso were part of a new wave of artist who set out to break the rules of realism and color schemes. Instead, these artist used colors and forms to create an artistic style called "cubism". Cubism and it's impact was my choice of film because of the obvious connection to these artists. Although these two artist found favor with the female form in their art, the geometric manner with which they would be illustrated was new a...

module #10 African and Islamic Art

I chose the two film "African Art Legacy o oppression" and "Islamic Art: Africa and Central Asia" because I realize how little information had been shared about the continent of Africa in my educational experience and this was an opportunity to learn more. African art is one with nature, incomplete and meant to growyh organically with the people. Masks made of wood, mosques made of mud, pyramids made of earthen materials all intended to last until being reclaimed by nature from whence it came. Dirt, rock minerals, wood were main mediums for art and architecture in Africa. Much of the art was iconographic and pleasing to the eyes. Most of the art did not survive long periods of time because of the medium that was used for it  and as a result of the environment in which it was preserved. Perceptual art was based on artist interpretation while conceptual art flowed from the artists imagination. Africa is a large and diverse continent where masks, art and architectur...

Module #10 Inspirational Masks

This is an embedded Microsoft Office document, powered by Office Online . I chose these three examples of African masks because I felt a kinship to them. The main medium for most of the masks that I I viewed was wood, fabric and grass or some other natural fiber. These masks all display elements and principles of art. I enjoy the geometric design employed with the lines, shapes, color, and textures along with the principles of balance in the symmetry, the movement of natural materials like grass, and emphasis on mood such as sad and happy. These masks of seem to be used in rituals which were designed for certain ceremonies. The vibrant energy or the melancholy solemn ties are apparent for the purpose of these masks.

Module #10 My Masks

Image
I chose this style for my mask to demonstrate my feelings and traditions. My masks would incorporate wood, grass, colors and natural stones or beads to adorn it. I chose the geometric patterns circles and triangles because they are both equal in measurement, 360 degrees, symbolizing the whole of life. I chose the color scheme red, black, and green to symbolize the blood, dirt, and lushness of plants provided for man. I chose brown to symbolize Earth and Mankind. My maske has open eyes and a closed mouth to indicate how we should carry ourselves throughout life. My mask would be used in celebration of the bounty that man has been given domain over that he may have life and pleasure.

Module #6 peer review

https://balkart.blogspot.com/ https://lookontheright.blogspot.com/      These two blogs display the work and attention to detail that both of these bloggers used while creating the slideshows “elements and principles of art”. They both showed the elements (lines, value, shapes, form, etc...) and the principles (balance, contrast, movement, pattern, etc..) required of this project in personal and dynamic pictures.      The second project was an evaluation of their visit to the art gallery and the similarities between their postings of pictures and mine. Although there were few similarities between mine and their projects I was surprised to see how similar their two projects were. They both chose Albright Knox Art Gallery as their venue of choice just as I had but they both chose primarily oils on canvas as their main preference of medium, they both chose “The Dog Walking” as one of the painting that caught their attention.      I think th...

Module #9 Hands

Image
Otherhand Using my hand as a model gave me a familiar subject but with a different perspective and appreciation of what I had been looking at all of these years. Drawing my hand on paper was less painful than I thought after employing some of the techniques that I have gleaned from my reading and film work, most importantly patience. I chose pencil as my medium for obvious reasons, it is erasable. Working with my dominant hand is a new enough adventure for me during this course and now I am being challenged to go even further now and use my off hand to draw its counterpart. This endeavor seemed to test boundaries for my hands relationship with one another revealing a pleasant surprise. Though it was an awkward feeling drawing with either hand I became comfortable over time using both hands. The outcomes using either hand were not that dissimilar and represented a noble effort on my part. My hands appear to have some symbiosis with each other that I had been subduing. This was a les...

Module #9 Blog Review

I chose "The Power of Art": Caravaggio so that I might discover what was meant by power as described in the title. I admired Michelangelo's painting of Matthew which began to illustrate a trend towards representational style of art being practiced during the time of the renaissance in the catholic church and in Europe. Michelangelo was born during this renaissance on which he would have an impact. Art had for the previous 3,000 years had been depicted in two dimension and profile without much emotion or movement. The Greek and Roman cultures in the middle ages began to advance the art into three dimensional depictions with movement and realism. This style was promoted by the church and used to promote the church with the most favorable messages and images. Michelangelo however chose to take the beauty of creating art and its figures and illustrate the ugly realities of everyday life in his creations with his depictions of pain, agony, poverty, and the tortured portra...

Module 8 film review

I c hose the film "The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure" along with "More Human than Human". It is my belief that the former film is encapsulated in the latter film. I additionally believe that the former film is enhanced by the second film because of a chance encounter between two cultures, this enhancement would advance the science and add to the styling and development of the human figure changing how we see ourselves. The first film gives us a history of human development and the psyche. The film takes the viewer on a journey illustrating the development of man in his natural environment, and the development of art that represented what man and woman looked like. It began in the cradle of creatio in the Nile Valley before and after it was developed into an advanced civilization. The figurine art of the nomads who had no interest in exemplifying arms and faces on the human body but instead crafted figures with exaggerated stomachs and breasts...

Module #1 Creating my Blog

The process for creating this blog is only daunting because I am working in the blind this being my first attempt at blogging. I'm hoping that this attempt is successful as I'm not sure about my ability to properly submit my response. iexpect to have my horizons expanded in all aspects of art. online courses are new for me and i will have to learn to navigate my way through. The growth videos encouraging perseverance, expanding horizons and pushing forward are attributes that I admire.

Module #7 Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prarie View

I chose this film because Wright was an American visionary and an icon who developed and enhanced  an original architectural category with his prairie style architecture. This film seems to be a part of the motif exhibited in the book. It incorporated original architectural techniques by recycling clay, boulders, and other natural materials during construction of some of his earliest homes after excavating basement in his new build homes. Wright tried to incorporate nature and the surrounding environment when designing his homes. Wright wanted to create a synergy between architecture, nature, and science, an organic architecture. This film by including Sullivan and Richardson gives us Buffalonian's pride in the treasures that we have access to. Wright emphasizes wood and nature in his architecture which was a stark difference from the other film that I watched, "The science of design." Wright distinguished his architecture with the use of lights, natural and man...

Module #7 Architecture: The Science of Design

The advent of skyscrapers incorporated vertical airspace changing the environment that we live in and how we live in it. Steel was stronger and more durable. Improved engineering allowed for architects and builders to do so in a multitude of ways when considering how to build one of these new skyscrapers or taller buildings. Uniformed codes were established along with regulations put into place to address unprecedented issues accompanying this new use of vertical and subterranean space where a suitable foundation would have to built support such massive structures. Never before seen issues such as sway, turbulence, and air quality while socially citizens adopted a new vertical existence as a new way of life. Elevators were added to enable easier access then what stairs could have provided in these taller buildings.      The reading and the video affirmed one another chronicling architecture from ancient to modern science..The video concentrated on the...
