Module #11 3 Art displays

1. Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, born 1929). Title: Pumpkins. Media: Mirrored and polished bronze. Overhead white spotlight are used to highlight this artwork. It is elevated on a white square platform enclosed with rope. The walls are flat white, surrounding an open space that allows for a 360 degree view and easy access for patrons. It has form, balance and proportion, colored black and gold on high polished bronze. This "Pumpkin" is arranged in it's own space at the Albright Knox Art Gallery (all three pieces are from the gallery). I think that this art is organic in its representation although the media is inorganic. The geometric patterns painted black and gold do not resemble a pumpkin's colors, but is pleasing to the eyes nonetheless. As the artist intended, the "pumpkin" speaks to, life, fertility, and art in my opinion. I would categorize this as modern/pop art.
2. Alberto Giacometti (Swiss, 1902-1966). Title: Invisible Object (Hands Holding the Void, 1934). Located against a gallery wall makes it accessible from only three sides. This sculpture is mounted on an elevated square base enclosed by ropes. The black statue of three individuals elevated on each others backsides, one rising higher than the previous form, is displayed against a white wall. There are balance, form, proportion, movement , and emphasis displayed in this work. Although it is only accessible on three sides, I think that the emphasis of individuals rising upward is prominently displayed. Made in three dimensions, it reminds me of two dimensional Egyptian artwork.
3. George Segal (American, 1924-2000). Title: Cinema, 1963. Media: Plaster, illuminated Plexiglas and metal. Cinema is "Representational" artwork displayed with minimal light to highlight it (light is a major construct of this piece). It is a floor to ceiling, wall to wall display of a cinema marquee being updated by a man (a plastered bill poster) arranging letters on its lighted display. This piece is located in a space of its own, easily accessible for patrons to view. The backdrop is a blackwall with the lighted marquee sign and bill poster in front of it. This is a modern/pop piece of art in my estimation, displaying a daily street scene in artistic form. The red letters, white marquee and black letters, along with the white plaster bill poster, make fo a realistic piece of art that includes form, balance, lines , movement, proportion and all of the elements and principles of art in it.
I think that the three pieces are prominently and well displayed for the viewers pleasure. As in my previous commentaries these pieces of art have shown the dedication, time, and patience of the artist to make this art prominent to me. Though they are different in size and proportion, the artists determination and creativity making their art is similar and clear to me.
